Surprise... we are spending our autumn and Christmas season here on the rainy wet coast.

There is a first time for everything and is old is now new again for us.  I am dragging out my containers of Christmas decorations that have been stacked under the stairs for 10 years and before that, were in the attic at the farmhouse for about 2 or 3 years.  I did open a few last season when we were home for 10 days over Christmas, just make the house a bit festive.  However, last year, I did decorate in Mesa, Arizona and so we had our normal festive atmosphere there.

So, Christmas season begins  and while we have enduring weeks of never ending rain, we have had some brilliant days where the courts were dry enough to get out on them and we now have a great forecast for this week, beginning tomorrow.

This has been a typical day for us and we are determined to walk daily if we can't play tennis.  So, we walk by the courts.  UGH. One day when it was dry enough for us to use, a city worker showed up so we had a delay while he blew the leaves off the court.

In the quilting world, I did manage to get my steps completed for the Meadowland mystery for November.  All done and ready for the next step this Thursday.

I added a stencil to my wall.  I found this while cleaning up and thought that it was rather perfect to see daily. My white board is full and have had a good challenge for November.  It is looking much better, 3 weeks later!
This quilt got finished.  These are bento blocks that I originally made for a quilt of Valour but, there was a need for a quilt for a Silver Mother in our community. That means that she lost her son while he was serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.  So, while not a QOV, it is similar and went to someone who really needed a quilted hug.

This was a quilt made from a 'bag' of fabrics picked up at the Fraser Valley Modern guild morning where we had drop offs and things to grab from community quilts.  Ready for quilting. I was not really happy with the outcome but, once quilted, it will add some brightness to someone who needs a hug.

And a hiking day where I looked up at the steep hill ahead of me and I just climbed up a good distance already!
This quilt was started during our September retreat with the Wednesday Divas.  It was a jelly roll of assorted colours and fabrics that seemed totally unrelated to each other so I started stitching and makes half square triangles.  It is now quilted and bound.
These are the leftovers from the strip sets made for the quilt above.  I used a white fabric for the half square triangles so interesting to see the difference?
The evening of the full moon... clear enough for us to see it.  A lovely break from rain.
Lights are up on our patio and the sky to the west looked promising.
Two quilts made for the modern guild that are ready for quilting and binding.

This is the quilt made from the charm packs I had on hand.  The November challenge for Heartstrings was using charm packs. This will be a quilt of Valour and on the list for December.

A close up of the blocks all made using Northcott O Canada fabrics.

My Canada 52 weeks blocks are done... all put together and ready for quilting and binding... another December project.

There was a call from one of our Wednesday quilt group that the local native band needs some baby quilts so I decided to pull out some fat quarters and make 3 quilts.

And found these Christmas strips that I will be great for some projects.
So, a few quilt tops ready for quilting and binding starting tomorrow.

And containers of Christmas decorations waiting to be opened and gone through.  It has been a long time since I touched these and am looking forward to a lot of memories that will come bubbling up.

Pile of quilts that are quilted and on the table ready for binding.  The bindings are all made and one a day will get them done quickly.

Mid November 2020 and still in the midst of THE pandemic

Wow, who knew that this COVID 19 was going to hang around so long.  I am not really happy to be home in BC when I would normally be in the Arizona sunshine.  It is more than that.  Normally, I would be active and playing tennis daily if not twice daily some days.  And I would be quilting and visiting with my crafty friends.  And we would be attending pot lucks, picnics, entertaining friends for dinner and, at this time, would be planning a large gathering at our home to celebrate Thanksgiving.

But, here I sit in dreary, dark, wet BC.  It is hard to make the best of this situation although we did manage a few days of tennis last week when we were lucky enough to play in almost freezing temps on barely dry courts but if you want to play, you have to go with the conditions.

This week isn't looking so good for being outdoors on the court.  But, on the other hand, it is a good thing we are home.  My husband has a couple of Moh's surgeries coming up on his hands plus two iron infusions for him in December and I have a PET scan to look at a spot in my lungs.

The plus side of all of this is that some UFO's are getting tackled as well, of course, 'oh look', a new project!

The first week of November, I made a huge effort to get quilts loaded on the B-line and quilted.  And, I was successful.  It felt so good! The first quilt is one from January that I made while in Arizona.  It was a challenge from my Heartstrings group and we were to use a 'bundle'. I had a bundle of fat quarters and added in more to have enough for 20 blocks and a decent size, finished quilt.  It is now quilted and bound.

This quilt was a kit on sale from Connecting Threads.  It is also now finished and ready to be donated to Quilts of Valour.
This quilt came from a set of Jolly Bars (5"x 10") that I had on hand in Arizona.  I pulled out a jelly roll that sort of went the jolly bars and started stitching without any real plan.  It is now done and in the 'to be donated' pile of quilts.
A UFO!  I'm not sure if I started this in 2019 or 2018 and need to go back and search the blog.   It was a jelly roll and was very bright colours.  The pattern created hourglass/pinwheels. I had made a block to test the pattern and then I put it away.  Now, done!
And, one of my favourite block patterns to make.  This block makes excellent use of your fabric with little or no waste.  I cut up some 6" squares for the centers of the blocks that were leftover from backings.  And, now in the pile of quilts for Quilts of Valour.  It is hard to see but the white fabric has red maple leaves on it... they look like polka dots from a distance.

Then last week happened and I wandered away from the B-line and decided to get all the above quilts bound.  It actually took more time that I had figured on?

And of course, a few new project started calling my name. Heartstrings challenge for November is to use charm packs. I had three waiting for me that were Stonehenge Oh Canada fabrics.  I decided on a split 9 patch and I started stitching.

After I had the quilt top made, I decided it was too small so dug around in my Oh Canada fabrics and found a border to use and got that added. It is hard to see the fabrics from a distance so added in a close up of what some of the fabrics look like.  Another project residing on a hanger waiting for quilting and binding.
I also cut up and stitched the fabric from the FVMQG.  They hand out bags of fabrics and you can do as you wish with them.  Since the fabric was 'critters', it is obviously suited for a child so I made two quilt tops, each are 40" x50".  They will go back to the guild and get kitted up with batting and backing and binding.
I have this quilt under my needle on my domestic machine and started quilting and then got distracted by my piecing projects.  This would be a good project to work on while watching Hallmark movies!

And, I dug out my Canada 52 blocks challenge.  I actually have 56 blocks for a 7 x 8 setting.  A few of the blocks had been made last January in Arizona and needed to have their sashings added.  That is now done and these can go up on the design wall and are ready to be stitched into a quilt top.  And, once I get them quilted, there will be another UFO done.  This was started late fall 2019.  Not ancient, but old enough to be finished up soon.
This is my next project in a bag for FVMQG.  I have 3 fabrics and each measures around a yard. I found a cute pattern that doesn't require cutting up the fabric too much and it is for 3 fabrics so this is what is going to get made.
And then there are bento blocks.  I had a number of them made last fall and earlier this year and they have sat on their hanger.  Then a donation of blocks arrived in the mail.  I only needed two more blocks to have enough for a quilt.  Two more blocks were made and now these are also ready to get laid out on the design wall and turned into a quilt top for Quilts of Valour.
In the meantime, if it is dry, we head out to the courts for games and drills.
And on lovely, sunny days, we enjoy our view of Mt. Baker.

Today, it is blustery with a wind warning so back to my sewing machine!! This is my updated list and am happy to have crossed off a few projects.

November 2020 - in the Pacific Northwest

This is the first time in 15 years that we have been here in the Pacific Northwest for November and it is a bit of a change for us.  Normally, we head to Arizona and soak up the last of the summer heat and head into a 'warm' winter.  Here, we are having sunny but cold days, wet and rainy days and blah, overcast days.  However, quilter is never without projects.  And, when the courts are dry, we bundle up and head outside for some fresh air and exercise.

I am posting my list for November - updated

I aI am working on quilting 13 projects this month and getting them bound.  Two of the three boxes that I mailed to myself from Mesa to WA state in March have gone from the normal place that we pick up our mail from to another place that offered a service to deliver to BC. That didn't work out and the stopped the service but the gal there did repack my items and mailed through USPS and Canada Post what I hoped were all the quilting items.  I seem to be missing some binding, but I can live with that.   Not too sure if I will ever my third box of personal items but time will tell.

This is Boo.... finished in time for Halloween.  Wow, was that really only 8 days ago?

These are the tops that came in the first box that arrived from Mesa.  My piecing from last Jan-Mar.

So, I made an effort to get battings cut and backings made for each of the quilts PLUS what I had on hangers from my Sept and October stitching. I chose to quilt the two smaller preemie quilts first so I could enjoy some success!

So, they are finished and I am happy with two completions early in the month.  I have crossed them off my list at the top of the page.

These ones have been quilted and the bindings are made, just waiting for a rainy day and good Hallmark movie to watch while I stitch them on.  Close but not quite finished.
I have this one layered and waiting also for a good movie on tv.  Maybe while I watch Dancing with the Stars on Monday evening?
Enough trimming and scraps to fill a pillowcase and it just needs stitching up and will be donated to the homeless shelter.
This one is done and waiting for binding.
Canada 52 blocks waiting to be finished with borders on the last few blocks that arrived from Mesa and then I can lay them out and get the top put together.
This one is currently on my B-line home quilting system and will be next to be quilted.  I have developed a bit of a system.  With tennis at 1pm, I was having trouble finding time to quilt but now, I load a quilt in the evening and quilt it in the morning or vice versa.  It is working for me and had a good week getting quilts from a pile waiting to be quilted to the pile waiting for binding.  Progress.
This one will be up next on the quilt system.
And, these are waiting for their turn.
Two projects that I picked up from the modern guild that I need to turn into quilt tops.  One day?

Binding ready to press for another quilt.
One final project... charms for Heartstrings for November that I need to do something with... again, one day, later this month.
And there you have it.  November, and time to keep working on projects.
